The short answer

A short, free metroidvania demo starring Andromeda Shun, trapped in Saga's looping Gemini Temple. Chain combos, a projectile-reflecting barrier, a Cosmo-burning storm and a Shadow-sight gimmick carry the Castlevania: Symphony of the Night influence. Play it in a browser or download it for Windows, macOS or Linux, in English or Portuguese.

What is Saint Seiya: Gemini Maze?

Saint Seiya: Gemini Maze is a 2D platformer built as a metroidvania fan demo, and its hook sits in the setting itself: Andromeda Shun is trapped in Saga's maze inside the Gemini Temple, where light and shadow overlap, corridors loop back on themselves, and some of the clocks are lying. The Castlevania: Symphony of the Night influence is worn openly, from the stat sheet to the way exploration is paced.

It is a short, free demo rather than a commercial release, published on 20 October 2026 as an unofficial, non-profit fan game that is not affiliated with Masami Kurumada, Shueisha, Toei Animation or Bandai Namco. It runs in a browser through a playable frame, and separate builds are offered for Windows, macOS and Linux. The game is playable in English and Portuguese, with the language switched from the title or status screen.

How to play

Shun fights with the Andromeda Chain. Nebula Chain is a fast chain whip, and a second press turns it into Rolling Defense, a circular lash. Holding Circle Defense instead raises a barrier that sends projectiles back at whoever fired them, while Nebula Storm spends Cosmo for a storm attack. The backdash and air attacks round out the movement, and six stats — STR, CON, INT, LCK, ATT and DEF — climb as Shun levels up.

The maze itself is the puzzle. Spending Cosmo lets Shun sense the Shadow, and the temple shows its other face: corridors that seemed to stop open up, hidden stairs appear, and illusions fall away. Going back to the Light costs nothing, but certain routes exist on only one side of the divide, so the two states have to be swapped constantly. The toggle even works in mid-air.

Two landmarks anchor the run. In the Chamber of Clocks, thirteen clocks hang in the dark; some restore Shun, others are traps that raise the dead, and only the Shadow shows which ones are telling the truth. At the heart of the maze waits the Andromeda Reflection, an illusion that knows every one of Shun's moves because those moves are its own.

Controls

On a keyboard, movement sits on the arrow keys or A and D, with Space or Z for jumping. X or J throws the Nebula Chain, and a second press converts it into the circular lash; C or K fires Nebula Storm, and holding V or L raises Circle Defense. Shift triggers the backdash. Q or Tab flips between Light and Shadow and can be used while airborne, which matters for routes that only exist on one side. Up handles doors and clocks, and Esc opens the status and pause screen.

With a gamepad, A jumps, X throws the chain, Y fires the storm, B raises the barrier, LB backdashes and RB toggles Light and Shadow. Language is changed by pressing Q on the title or status screen.

Tips for your first run

Treat the opening stretch as a lesson in swapping states rather than a race to the exit. A few habits make the demo's short run much smoother.

If the demo is running on macOS, the app is unsigned, so the first launch needs a right-click on the file followed by Open.

  • Hold Circle Defense against anything that fires a projectile; the barrier returns the shot to its sender instead of absorbing it.
  • Press the chain twice. The circular lash from Rolling Defense sweeps around Shun and covers angles the straight whip cannot reach.
  • Keep Cosmo in reserve for sensing. Nebula Storm is the loud option, but the Shadow sight is what actually opens the map, and returning to the Light is free.
  • Only trust a clock while in the Shadow. Of the thirteen in the Chamber of Clocks, some restore Shun and others raise the dead, and that side of the maze is what exposes the difference.
  • Flip sides while airborne. The toggle works in mid-air, so a gap that looks like a dead end can be tested before landing.
  • Backdash out of a bad commitment. When a corridor loops back on itself and an ambush appears, the backdash is the cleanest exit.

Content and replayability

The scope is deliberately small: a short demo, one maze to untangle, and a single confrontation waiting at its centre. What fills that space is the interplay between stats and state-swapping. STR, CON, INT, LCK, ATT and DEF grow as Shun levels, so the order in which the temple is explored shapes how the character develops, and the Andromeda Reflection's habit of mirroring Shun's own moves turns every upgrade into something to fight against.

Replay value comes from the maze's two faces. Paths that exist only in the Light and paths that exist only in the Shadow mean any single route is only ever half-complete, and the thirteen clocks add a risk-versus-reward decision every time one is found. Two language options, English and Portuguese, also make a second pass possible in the other script. Combat formulas drawn from Symphony of the Night reference material give the numbers a familiar feel for Castlevania veterans, and the demo's brief length makes it an easy thing to revisit rather than a long commitment.

Presentation and performance

Visually the demo is 2D pixel art with an anime edge, and the credits lay out where the pieces come from. Wesley Rosa handled game design, programming, original art, music and sound effects. Shun's sprites come from Prodijiu's JUS Reborn work, the scenery is based on Jump Ultimate Stars as ripped by DoB, and the enemies, torches and effects are taken from GothicVania by Luis Zuno, released under CC0. The interface font is Pixelify Sans by Stefie Justprince, under the SIL Open Font License.

The combat maths takes cues from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night FAQs, which shows in the six-stat spread and the backdash. One warning belongs before anyone presses Play: the game uses screen flashes and rapid colour changes, so players sensitive to that should take care.

On the technical side, browser play needs no install at all, while the Windows, macOS and Linux versions are separate downloads. On macOS the build is unsigned, so the first launch requires right-clicking the app and choosing Open.

Who should play it

Saint Seiya fans who want to see Shun handled as a lead rather than a supporting piece are the obvious audience, and the Gemini Temple maze gives the demo one specific corner of the story to work in instead of a greatest-hits tour. Anyone curious about the Andromeda Chain translated into a whip-style weapon will find it here.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night veterans will recognise the shape of it: the stat sheet, the backdash, the satisfaction of a power that changes how the map reads. Players who like metroidvanias but have limited time will find the short length inviting, since it can be opened in a browser tab without a download. Portuguese-speaking players get a fully localised option.

Players after a lengthy campaign should look elsewhere, because this is a demo and it is a short one. Anyone who needs to avoid flashing screens should sit this one out.
